At this year’s highly anticipated Aerodays 2025, the EU-funded AREANA project marks a significant milestone in European aviation research by the successful launch of the “AREANA Synergy MoU.”

This new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is designed to foster sustainable synergies and deeper collaboration within the European Aviation Research ecosystem.

The MoU represents a collective commitment from several European ministries and other project management entities responsible for aviation research. The initiative aims to pave the way for long-term cooperation, with an initial group of signatories from Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and the United Kingdom.

The AREANA team plans to build on this foundation by engaging further stakeholders across Europe and beyond. Their goal is to progressively expand the network and encourage joint action on shared research priorities, with openness to collaboration with countries outside Europe that align with European values and aspire to work closely with its research community.

The AREANA Synergy MoU outlines a flexible framework of activities that signatories can adopt based on their strategic goals and capacities. These include joint research funding, collaborative strategy development, data sharing, and enhanced use of aviation research and technology infrastructure.

Dr Hartwig Hagena, Leader of the AREANA Synergy Work Package, highlights the broader significance of this initiative, stating:

“Exactly 80 years after the end of the Second World War, with its unprecedented destruction in Europe, we once again find ourselves in a historically critical situation that urgently requires strengthening European cooperation. I am personally pleased and grateful for the great willingness of the Signatory organizations to contribute to this common path.”

The launch of the AREANA Synergy MoU is a timely reminder of the power of cooperation in shaping a resilient and innovative future.
