The AREANA project was glad to support and attend the latest AZEA Workshop ‘’Recharging Regional Aviation – Electric & Hydrogen Opportunities for Europe’s Airlines’’ held last Tuesday, 25 November.  This Workshop, organised by the European Commission Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS)  with the support of the European Regions Airlines Association (ERA) and AREANA, provided perspectives on what the shift to zero-emission aviation really means for regional airline operators, from from fleet renewal and cost models to infrastructure, demand, and new routes that could restore essential regional connectivity.    It was truly insightful to see so many experts coming together to Brussels and connecting online to discuss this important topic.

Key topics included:

The operating patterns of commuter and feeder aircraft in Europe in the past, present, and future according to different scenarios developed by Eurocontrol

An overview of the ongoing developments and projects on hydrogen-powered, electric, and hybrid aircraft for up to 19 passengers provided by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA)

Updates on EU-funded research for small aircraft and on EU policy for zero-emission aviation by the European Commission Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) and the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE)

Perspectives from the regional aircraft operators Amelia and Widerøe Zero

Identifying and addressing mobility demand through the data-driven EU-funded SESAR JU project PRIAM, which was presented by the Project Coordinator Nommon Solutions & Technologies

An analysis of the prospects for hybrid-electric regional aircraft for air connectivity in Germany, which was presented by DLR Institute for Air Transport

Perspectives on on-demand Regional Air Mobility covering a data-driven model to reconnect Europe’s regional airports presented by VINI/ flivbird
